Collaboration is a key aspect of success in almost every field, from academia to industry. Studies show that collaborative learning can boost academic performance by as much as 20-40% as well as boost engagement. Despite this fact, a reported 70% of students feel alienated in their large, disconnected university lectures. The goal of StudyMate was to solve this challenge of connecting busy UW students together through a streamlined matching system. Drawing inspiration from dating apps and collaboration tools, our goal was to make it easier for students to connect based on academic interest. The outcome was a fully functional web application using Firebase and React, complete with matching, profile preferences, and group creation features. Studymates impact lies in its user focused approach to academic networking. The project overall gave us deep insight into project development, management, and real world problem solving.
